History

Paul's Cancer Support Centre started life in 1983 as the Battersea Cancer Support Group in the lounge of a flat on Battersea Rise. It was the first cancer support group in London, and was set up by Rachael Clyne and Roger Potter, a young couple who had just gone through the shock of Roger's cancer diagnosis.

Small premises were found near Wandsworth Town and the initial services offered included group work, counselling, relaxation and visualisation.

Over the years, the Centre has developed new initiatives and projects so that it can better meet the needs of people with cancer and their families.

Below are some of the milestones in the Centre's history:

1989 - move to premises on the 1st floor of the Battersea Central Mission in York Road, Battersea

1994 - publication of the booklet Massage for People with Cancer by Patricia McNamara. With its guidelines for practitioners, the booklet contributed to the current acceptance and provision of massage for people with cancer by mainstream health services

1995 - setting up of the Macmillan Cancer Information Service

1995 - setting up of the Home Visiting Service, which sends skilled volunteers to visit people with cancer who are housebound

1999 - publication of Communication and Cancer which aims to assist communication between people with cancer and health professionals, and between them and their family, friends and colleagues

2000 - the Home Visiting Service won a national Award for Voluntary Endeavour, sponsored by the Nationwide Building Society

2000 - publication of Lifeline, explaining the Centre's history, ethos and the services which have been developed

2001 - publication of the Home Visiting Service Manual, which helps groups to set up similar services

2001 - setting up of the Asian Outreach and Information Project, a collaboration with Cancer Equality, which is funded by the New Opportunities Fund

2003 - publication of two booklets - Understanding and Living with Cancer and Reduce Your Cancer Risk - the first translated information in the UK in Asian languages

2003 - the Centre's 20th Anniversary

2006 - GlaxoSmithKline IMPACT Award - rewarding excellence in community healthcare

2008 - Healing Journey courses started

2008 - the Centre's 25th Anniversary

2009 - move premises to Woburn House at Clapham Junction train station

2011 - move back to previous premises in York Road SW11
