The Healing Journey
Our
Information Service is available to anyone with cancer, their
family and friends and health care professionals.
It is now generally accepted by health professionals that it's not sufficient just to provide good quality medical treatment. People also need help in coping with their illness - providing accurate, varied and high quality information has a very important role in helping them to do this.
The opportunity to ask questions in an unhurried environment can also help reinforce and support the information supplied by doctors and health professionals.
There are likely to be many questions people will wish to ask along their cancer journey from diagnosis to treatment, and beyond. This can include questions about:
the disease, treatments, and side-effects
what practical and financial help is available
the wider impact of cancer and how the illness may affect family, social and work relationships
complementary therapies or self-help measures
how to adjust to living with or after a diagnosis of cancer.
You can either have a telephone conversation with our Macmillan Cancer Information and Education Officer or have a face-to-face meeting with her at the Centre.
To arrange either, please telephone the Centre on 020 7924 3924.
As everyone's information needs are different, the Information Officer will take time to discover what you want to find out more about.
Some people prefer the anonymity of telephone knowing they will never be asked to reveal more details about themselves than they feel comfortable with. Other people find it easier to have a face-to-face meeting.
In both situations, the aim is not just to provide facts but to allow the person to feel listened to and respected. Allowing people the space and time to talk enables them to become clearer about the issues that are worrying them.
Our Information Officer works at the Centre on Mondays and Tuesdays.
The Centre has:
a library of books that can be borrowed
audio and video cassettes
booklets and leaflets on many aspects of cancer, cancer treatment and complementary therapies
details of national and local organisations which focus on specific cancers, complementary therapies or local services.
The Information Service is a joint initiative between Paul's Cancer Support Centre and St George's Hospital Healthcare NHS Trust.
