Communication & Cancer

by Beverley van der Molen

In our work at the Centre, communication has repeatedly emerged as a key issue for our clients. Communication is a continuous two-way process between people with cancer, their family and friends and the cancer team caring for them.

This booklet was written to assist both people affected by cancer and health professionals to communicate effectively so that needs are met and care is provided more sensitively.

"I would have found this of enormous help when I was first diagnosed with cancer" - Centre user

"The handbook would have given me the confidence to ask questions until I was happy with the answers" - Centre user

" The simple but unpatronising language, free of medical jargon, will make it easy to absorb information when your mind is in a whirl" - Centre user

This handbook was funded by Macmillan Cancer Relief and the Department of Health.

Beverley van der Molen is the Centre's Macmillan Information and Education Officer.

Lifeline: Cancer Information, Support and Education in a Community Setting

Edited by Petra Griffiths and Francis Miller

This booklet explains the Centre's history, ethos and the services that have been developed. While the Centre has pioneered a community- based approach to cancer support, most of the activities can be provided in other settings such as hospitals.

There are chapters on key therapies including counselling, massage, relaxation and visualisation, and the Information and Home Visiting Services. Other chapters describe the Centre's collaborative partnerships, monitoring, evaluation and funding of its services and evidence of the effectiveness of psycho-social interventions.

The booklet provides a unique and in-depth examination of how a community-based cancer support centre works and the benefits to users. Essential reading for those setting up new services.

"I'm full of admiration for the Centre's underlying ethos, and for the clarity and simplicity of this booklet. All streets ahead of most of what's available"

Julie Friedeberger, yoga teacher and author of A Visible Wound - A Healing Journey through Breast Cancer

Massage for People with Cancer

by Patricia McNamara

New edition - 2005

Massage can be of great value for people with cancer. Benefits include reducing muscle tension, pain and blood pressure; increasing relaxation and calmness; improving body awareness and self-acceptance, and releasing tensions buried in the body.

This booklet reports on the pioneering study carried out by Patricia McNamara for the Centre. Her survey of massage therapists and doctors resulted in these guidelines for safe massage for people with cancer, who can now enjoy the benefits knowing that their therapist is aware of any potential hazards.

"... a superb overview ... readable and timely ..." - Professor Karol Sikora
Former Head of the Cancer Programme, World Health Organisation

Home Visiting Service Manual: How to set up a volunteer service for housebound people with cancer

by Petra Griffiths, Heather Smith and Denise Forde

The Home Visiting Service won the Nationwide Award for Voluntary Endeavour in 2000. This publication describes how the Service was set up and developed, and the essential components contributing to its success.

The start-up pack includes a computer disk containing all the documentation that our service uses such as referral forms, the Code of Practice for volunteers visiting people at home, an outline of the content of the training course, and guidelines covering visits to clients while in hospitals or hospices. The disk is sold without copyright so that the contents can be adapted and used by purchasers without any further charge.

There are also comments from clients, volunteers and health professionals.

"We ordered a copy of your Home Visiting Manual with a view to setting up a similar scheme...we stole all your ideas, quotes and literature!..(now) we have a fully trained group of volunteers all ready, willing and able to offer a Home Visiting Service! Your manual was absolutely invaluable.."

Jo-Anne Edwards, Voluntary Services Co-ordinator, Mount Vernon Hospital

(Having run for 15 years, the Home Visiting Service had to stop operating in 2009 due to lack of funds. We are currently looking to raise funds to re-start it.)
