The Healing Journey is a comprehensive discussion of what people with cancer can do to help themselves . This valuable book surveys the field of self-help, explaining the potential of each approach – from conventional medicine and dietary remedies to psychological approaches and spiritual avenues of therapy.

Author and cancer survivor, Dr Alastair Cunningham looks at developments in the field of psycho-oncology – the study of the effectiveness of the relationship between the mind and cancer. He analyzes new research on the effectiveness of group psychological therapy, looks closely at the impact of personal behaviours and attitudes, and discusses new treatment options.

By treading a middle ground between the conservatism of modern Western medicine and the radicalism of New Age thinking, Dr Cunningham has created a book that will help cancer patients and their families make rational decisions about responsible and effective self-help.

Dr Alastair Cunningham, who is now retired, was a senior scientist at the Ontario Cancer Institute, one of North America’s largest cancer research and treatment facilities. He was also Professor of Medical Biophysics and of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto, Clinical Co-Director of the Wellspring Centre, and a member of the Institute for the Advancement of Health and the Society for Behavioral Medicine.

He has PhD degrees in both cell biology and psychology, and more than 40 years of experience in cancer-related research. In 2003, Dr Cunningham was made an Officer of the Order of Canada.
