Payroll Giving

A simple, hassle free way to support Paul's Cancer Support Centre

Making a donation straight from your salary is an easy and tax efficient way of regularly giving to Paul's Cancer Support Centre. Payroll giving helps the Centre by providing on-going regular support, helping us to plan our services for those affected by cancer now and in the future.

There may already be a payroll giving scheme at your place of work. If not, you can find out here how payroll giving can be a simple way for you to regularly support the Centre.

Q How does payroll giving work?

Payroll giving is a tax effective way which allows an employee to donate to any UK registered charity by a direct deduction from their wage. Donations are taken from your gross salary before your income tax is calculated.

The Centre receives the entire pound you pledge but for basic–rate tax payers a £10 donation will see only £7.80 taken from your pay cheque and for higher –rate tax payers the same donation will cost only £6.

It is a simple, hassle free way to donate and once you have authorised a deduction there is nothing more for you to do. Many employers also operate a donation-matching scheme, doubling the size of your donation.

Q How do I know if I can donate through payroll giving at my place of work?

Ask your employer whether they are signed up to an approved payroll giving agency. These agencies administer the scheme on your employers’ behalf and distribute the funds to any UK registered charity.

Q What happens if my employer is not running a payroll giving scheme and I want to donate through my pay ?

If they are not running a scheme, why not refer them to the Inland Revenue website for further information on the benefits payroll giving can bring to both employer and employees.

Also, please contact the Centre and we can ask our professional fundraising organisation to forward details on the benefits of setting up a scheme to your employer.

Q I work for a small organisation, is there any help available to set up a payroll giving scheme?

If your employer has less than 499 employees, an initiative was launched in January 2005 by the Government to encourage small and medium size companies to offer payroll giving schemes to their staff.

The new scheme gives employers a financial incentive to cover any costs with introducing and administering the scheme plus as an incentive to employees, the Government will match all employees' donations £ for £ (up to £10 per month) for the first six months of giving from when the employee signs up.

If you would like further information about this exciting initiative, click here.

If you would like information about setting up a payroll giving scheme for any size organisation please email Lynn Leadbeater, our Development Officer.

Q How can I give money to charity through my tax return?

Don’t forget that if you complete a self assessment tax return you are able to nominate Paul's Cancer Support Centre to receive all or part of any repayment due to you.

The Centre's identification code is DAR39FG, which should be put on your tax return. Further information is available from the Inland Revenue.
